Farmers’ Markets of the Heartland launches with a giveaway

FarmersMarketsHeartlandDid I mention I wrote a book?  I’ve been kind of quiet about it here for a while, during the editing, designing, printing, shipping…

And now I’m delighted to announce it has arrived!  Farmers’ Markets of the Heartland is heading to a book store or mailbox near you.  It officially launches on June 4, but some folks who have pre-ordered have received their copies.  It even has its own Facebook page.

I am overwhelmed with gratitude for all the people who helped make this happen.  I want to send a big smushy thanks to all the good people who sell and shop at farmers’ markets, and especially those who took time to talk to me during the busy season.

If you’re inclined, click over to Amazon to “like” it, or even order!  Or stop by the online Barnes & Noble.  I have particular affection for independent book stores, so please tell me if you spot it while out on your rounds!

Or enter to win a copy!

In celebration of the book release, I’m giving away the very first autographed copy to someone who’s been with me along the way, meaning the readers, subscribers and followers of the Rustic Kitchen.

You can enter a bunch of ways:

  • Comment here telling me what you like about your favorite farmers market (don’t forget to name that market).
  • “Like” Farmers’ Markets of the Heartland on Facebook.
  • Follow me on Twitter or Pinterest, or both.
  • Sign up to receive my newsletter.
  • If you have a blog, post about the giveaway and link to this page.

Each of these touchpoints will get your name in the pot, and thus following me everywhere will improve your chances.  If you send your friends and they follow too, ask them to tell me and you’ll get your name in the kitty yet one more time. Post on your blog, and you’ll get two little pieces of paper with your name.  Next week I’ll announce the winner.

And let’s get together in person

I also have a few appearances scheduled, so please come out and say hello.  You don’t have to buy a book — I’m just grateful for the sign of solidarity!

  • May 30: appearance on Chicago Tonight on WTTW.  I’m sorry I can’t ask everyone to the studio for moral support, but I’d love you to watch and send good energy my way.
  • June 9:  Printers Row Lit Fest with Chicago Tribune’s Monica Eng and chef Sarah Stegner of Prairie Grass Café.
  • June 18: Floriole Bakery & Café: farm dinner featuring recipes adapted from the book, followed by book signing.
  • July 9: Chicago Public Library at the Harold Washington Library Center.
  • July 28: Organic Valley’s Kickapoo Country Fair.

Again, thanks to all for your encouragement and support!

I always enjoy the Wheaton’s French Farmer’s Market and so do my daughter and grandson (a gardener at age 7)

At the Tinley Park, IL farmers market no one wanted the beet tops with their beets. I asked the farmer if I could have some of the throw aways and he smiled at me and said I knew where the good part was. He loaded me up with beet tops. A very friendly fun market with dealers from many states each Saturday Morning.

My favorite market in St Louis is the Tower Grove Farmers’ Market. It is in a lovely park every Saturday from May to October, and on one Saturday each month from November to May at a church across the street from the park. Many and varied vendors along with other attractions.

I grew up in the Heartland and know how fabulous the farmers markets are in all of that area! Have visited the Chicago market and also the Des Moines, Iowa markets!

would love to have a copy of your book!!

    Thanks for doing it!

Capitol Hill’s Eastern Market, in Washington DC is my pick … and a reason to rise early on Saturdays. An open-air food market—you’ll find crates of locally grown fruit & vegetables from Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia—and the best freshly squeezed strawberry lemonade.

P.S. Janine, congratulations on your new publication…illustrations look edible! For your book sequel…Farmers’ Markets of the Mid-Atlantic is my vote!

I’m sorry I missed the giveaway but for some reason I have not received your newsletter for several months . This is the 1st since February I believe. |In any case , the Oak Park Farmers Market and the Evanston Farmers Market were always my favorite. The music and atmosphere at both were awesome. Both are ope3n air and have a great selection of organic produce.

Arlington Farmer\\\’s Market is my favorite. Situated next store to an old
country store converted to an antique place it just takes you back in time and I love all the fresh vegetables. Would love to win.

I too have been missing you and am going to change the address I receive the emails, in case that was the problem.

I love the Urban Gardens started in South Bend In, and their Market which is set up in a parking lot in the city. I love they are bringing only local food into the city and sharing the blessings that gardens bring!

  13. Lissa Dysart says:

I love both the Green City Market in Chicago, and the more-local-to-me Oak Park Farmer’s market. Both feature outstanding vendors and are institutions in their own right!

  14. Kate D. says:

My favorite local farmer’s market is in Saratoga Springs, NY - home of the famous Saratoga Race Track (just on the outskirts of the Adirondack Mountains).

The market has grown each year to include not only veggies, but baked goods, cheese, meats, jams and flowers (and more) from local farms and gardens.

It’s a great way to spend a Saturday morning. I really like getting to meet all the vendors and finding out where my food comes from. It doesn’t get any better than brushing dirt off a veggie that has just been harvested!

    Congrats on the book!
