Farmer Friday - Berry Patch Farm, and berry recipe links

judy henryMeet Judy Henry, who has been selling at the downtown Des Moines Farmers Market for 35 years!

Judy owns Berry Patch Farm, along with her husband Dean and son Mike.  It’s in Nevada, Iowa, not too far from Ames.  They grow a fantastic amount of fruit, including gooseberries, which just beg to be tossed into a pie.  But they’re best knows for strawberries.  When I look at my calendar, I’m guessing we have about three and a half months to go, at least in my neighborhood.

You can follow Berry Patch Farm on Twitter.

Reminded again of the down side of seasonal eating…

Out of season strawberries are never worth it — they taste like water at best. So hold off until they’re red all the way through, then buy flats and flats of them.  I offer up anticipation:

Strawberry bourbon sundaes

Orange-spiked sabayon for strawberries

Strawberries with cabernet syrup
